Avena Sativa

For thousands of years we have known and cultivated the oat as an important food crop, but it has the therapeutic properties as well. Health promoting and stimulating effects of Avena sativa were first observed 200 years ago in German Pharmacopoeia.

 

Description

Whole oats, including the husk or whole rolled endosperm.

Other possible names

A. byzantina, A. fatua, A. hybrida, A. orientalis, A. volgensis

Therapeutic use

General

  • Oat is rich in protein and high on energy. Builds muscle tone.
  • Increases stamina and hence used as a restorative tonic after illness.
  • Regulates cholesterol level in blood.
  • Direct application on skin reduces skin irritation.
  • Decrease anxiety that arises out of breaking any addiction.

Sexual

  • Enhances moos and feeling of wellbeing and mild relaxant. Reduces anxiety related to sexual performance.
  • Studies have shown that it helps in improved orgasm, increase sex drive and increase erection.
  • It is believed that it stimulates LH (Luteinizing hormone) which in turn stimulates the secretion of sex hormone testosterone in the body.
  • Frees testosterone, which is bind due to ageing and helps in sex drive and muscle growth which are associated functions of testosterone.
  • Compliments other aphrodisiac herbs specially Tribulus terrestris.

Cultivation

Oats is grown throughout the temperate zones, such as northwest Europe and Australia.

Safety and cautions

No major side-effects of Avena are known, where it is used as a dietary tonic. In case of horses, it has been observed that the large dose of concentrated oat can cause excitability. Also, it doesn’t suit well if sensitive to gluten.
